Dwight Howard made the first 3-pointer of his 2019-20 season during a 25-point blowout win of the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, giving coach Frank Vogel a few green hairs with his shot selection.

The Los Angeles Lakers center spotted up in the left corner, awaiting an inbounds pass, which he caught, jab-stepped, and launched — getting nothing but net in his only attempt from deep in the game.

“It’s like the scene from Major League where Willie Mays Hayes catches it over his shoulder and the manager says, ‘Great catch. Don’t ever do it again,’” said Vogel, according to Kyle Goon of the Southern California News Group. “One of those situations. We’ll take the three points for sure.”

Howard was 0-for-4 from the foul line, but was perfect from the floor, shooting 3-of-3 from the field for his seven points,  snatching nine rebounds and blocking three shots. His all-around play likely made Vogel fume a lot less about his shot selection, considering he'd put the effort at both ends of the floor.

The big man's 3-pointer gave the Lakers a 108-84 advantage in the fourth quarter — a shot much easier to swallow when up 21 with 6:25 left in regulation.

This was Howard's seventh career 3-pointer and the last since the 2017-18 season, when he went 1-of-7 from deep as a member of the Charlotte Hornets. The soon-to-be 34-year-old is only a 10.8% career 3-point shooter, so it's understandable why Vogel doesn't want him taking those shots more often.
