Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel is trying not to get bogged down in the details as the 2019-20 NBA season remains suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lakers coach stressed the importance of resetting and taking things one step at a time as teams around the league wait for the day when they will be cleared to play basketball once again (via Jackie MacMullan of ESPN):

“I’ve mentally flipped my seasons,” said Lakers coach Frank Vogel. “I’m in the summer now. I really feel it’s necessary for us to mentally decompress. It’s a better mindset than trying to power through this. If we sprint through what could potentially be a two- to three-month break, with workouts and meetings and projects and film throughout, will we be fresh when it matters? We need to realize ‘when it matters’ could be July or August.”

Vogel certainly has a point.

President Trump held a conference call with the commissioners of nearly every major sporting league on Saturday, expressing his own optimism that sports will return to American society later this summer.

However, the NBA is months away from returning at best, and there's still a chance this season doesn't resume. With that in mind, it seems logical for Vogel, the Lakers and others around the league to preach patience. There are simply no guarantees when it comes to this pandemic.

Still, Lakers players, coaches and fans have reason to feel somewhat disappointed. Los Angeles went 13-3 dating back to the start of February prior to the suspension of play, with LeBron James in particular playing at an MVP level. The Lakers were as hot as any team in basketball, seemingly building momentum at just the right time as the best team in the Western Conference.

But Vogel is not dwelling on the matter, instead preparing for what might come next for the Lakers in the event the remainder of the season is canceled.
