Despite making his intentions of being a starter real clear during a revealing interview with Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, Los Angeles Lakers point guard Isaiah Thomas wouldn't rule out a return to this team, even in the current backup point guard job he holds.

“I like it here, I like the situation I'm in, the system, coaching staff,” Thomas said, according to Tania Ganguli of The Los Angeles Times. “Organization's been great to me. If things work out I would love to be here. You just never know. With free agency you've got to keep your options open. I have no complaints since I've stepped foot and put a Laker uniform on.”

Most in league circles believe Thomas' stint with the Lakers is merely a rental before the Lakers front office makes all the necessary clean up to clear the runway for the likes of LeBron James and Paul George in the summer.

James has already proven to not be a fit during his 15 games alongside Thomas with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and it's become very evident that Thomas still has All-Star-caliber aspirations — ones that could be potentially impossible to reach coming off the bench. He candidly noted that his goals and this roster's aren't aligned, but expressed willingness in cultivating that mentality.

“I want to be great,” Thomas said. “I want to win MVP, I want to continue to be an All-Star. Their goals probably aren't that yet. Coming straight into the league especially at 19, 20 years old. They're in it for the experience just to figure things out on their own. And then on top of getting to the playoffs and winning championships, I want all that and it might not be their mindset yet. But at the same time being on this team I'm trying to put that in their heads that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Why not think big?”

The market won't be what Thomas expects it, given his career-altering hip injury, which has proven worrisome to the Boston Celtics at the very least. If the Lakers fail to reel in two superstar players, there's still a chance they keep the 5-foot-9 dynamo on the roster for the right price.
