In a time when point guards are dominating the NBA with their scoring, Lonzo Ball heads into the 2017-18 NBA season as a pass-first point guard. During his lone season at UCLA, Ball was often compared to Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd.
Kidd, who is currently the Milwaukee Bucks head coach, was asked if there was only player in today's game that reminds him of himself. According to On Par Podcast, Kidd mentioned Ball and his Las Vegas Summer League performance as transcribed by Ryne Nelson of SLAM:
“I guess the kid out of L.A. The Ball kid, Lonzo Ball. I guess he’s gotten a lot of comparison. Watching him in Vegas (at Summer League), he understands the floor, he understands the situation. He finds the open guy. Only time will tell. He might be better than I am.”
In addition, Kidd discussed Ball's jump shot and needing to change it:
“So for Ball, I think you got to look at him being able to work on the jump shot because of being able to only go one way without it being defended well.”
After averaging a near triple-double en route to the Las Vegas Summer League Most Valuable Player award, there is plenty of excitement surrounding Ball. While Ball's shooting form will continue to be discussed, his ability to make his teammates around him better is extremely rare.
Heading into the new season, the Lakers are hoping Ball can showcase his All-Star potential. It is no secret Los Angeles is attempting to create the necessary cap space to sign two max contract players in LeBron James and Paul George in 2018 free agency.
