Following the death of his father, Jeanie Buss became the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2013. While there have been a number of controversies that surrounded the development, she still believes that being a family business has not held the franchise back.

Buss recently spoke about how running a family business has even made it easy for them to enjoy the success the Lakers have had since her father purchased it. Jeanie Buss also added, via Jonathon Diamond of the Los Angeles Business Journal, that players see it as an advantage knowing who they work for, adding to their appeal as a free agent destination.

“Our record should speak for itself. Aside from the last few years, we’ve been a competitive team. I don’t think being a family business has held us back. It’s important for athletes to know who they work for and who they’re representing, important to have that connection – who’s at the top, who’s putting this all together?”

With the instability in the ownership now a thing of the past, coupled with the arrival of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka to their fold, the Lakers are looking geared to return to their glory days in the next few years. They have invested on young talent and have placed themselves in a good position to snag a star or two in free agency which could start their rise to being contenders again.

If Jeanie Buss bring plenty more success now that she's the controlling owner, it may very well cement her place as one of the better team owners in history and strengthen her legacy. However, there are also a lot of factors to consider first before already expecting that she will be able to do just that, and it will be very interesting to find out how things will pan out for her and the family business.
