The Los Angles Lakers organization is mourning the loss of JoAnn Buss, the mother of team president Jeanie Buss and the wife of the team's late majority owner Dr. Jerry Buss.

Los Angeles announced JoAnn's passing on Twitter today, adding that the organization is requesting donations to the American Cancer Society or the Lakers Youth Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Dr. Buss and JoAnn met at the University of Wyoming. They divorced in 1972 after having four children together, Johnny, Jim, Jeanie and Janie. Lakers legend, Magic Johnson, weighed in on Twitter, writing, “I was saddened to hear the news that JoAnn Buss, mother of Jeanie, Johnny, Jim and Janie, and wife of Dr. Buss, has passed away. She was an incredible friend and woman. Cookie and I are glad she was a part of our lives for more than 40 years.”

Seven years after divorcing JoAnn, Dr. Buss purchased the Lakers along with the Los Angeles Kings hockey team of the NHL and the Forum arena. The Lakers won ten titles over the course of his ownership. Dr. Buss passed away in February of 2013.

Buss' 66 percent controlling ownership of the Lakers passed to his six children via a trust, with each child receiving an equal vote — 11 percent for each child. His succession plan was for Jeanie to assume his previous title as the franchise governor as well as its team representative at NBA Board of Governors meetings. However, his son Jim instead ran the team until he was relieved of his duties so that Jeanie could take over in March of 2017.

Though she was not involved with her ex-husbands' team, JoAnn Buss was the matron of one of the NBA's foremost families. Look for the Lakers to acknowledge her passing at their next home game, Sunday December 22 against the Denver Nuggets, if not sooner.
