Have you ever wanted to own a piece of basketball history? Well, now you can, because Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has announced that he's selling his memorabilia.

As we'd previously revealed, the Lakers legend is auctioning off four of his five NBA rings. Now, according to Goldin Auctions, we know why he's doing that.

According to Jabbar, it's not because he's hit financial hard times (although he acknowledges that he has, in the past, not been wise with his money). Rather, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says that he's interested in thinking of the long-term effects of his financial literacy, and credits his new financial adviser with the move.

“Although I had a well-publicized setback many years ago, I was able to find the right help when I teamed up with Deborah Morales at Iconomy to help me in my post-career life. Through her Lifetime Legacy Planning, she was able to put me on a solid financial path that allowed me to pursue my passions for writing and collecting. Why then am I auctioning off my sports memorabilia? When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all. Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. “

It sounds like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is secure within himself and his decision, so good for him.
