Former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant has been busy in his retirement. While LeBron James now stands in the spotlight in L.A., Bryant is using his cache to help kids in need.

The five-time NBA champion surprised kids at Oxford Preparatory Academy with a visit that included a massive book donation, according to a press release.

Today, Academy Award-winning writer/producer, CEO of Granity Studios and legendary 5-time NBA champion, Kobe Bryant, paid a surprise holiday visit to the students of Oxford Preparatory Academy in Mission Viejo, CA. The inspired youth of Oxford Prep have had episodes of Kobe’s Granity Studios’ no. 1 Kids/Family Apple podcast, “The Punies,” implemented into their curriculum as a fun, alternative learning technique that has encouraged creativity, joy and innovation in the students.

With a focus on listening and writing standards, students created interactive projects to showcase their learning in unique ways in accordance with Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. So moved by the positive impact of the podcast, Kobe decided to pay the school a special visit just before the holidays. The basketball icon played games with the students, participated in their lesson plan and spread more holiday cheer by gifting the students with a donation of books for their school library to promote the power and importance of reading.

Kobe Bryant retired following the 2015-16 season with career averages of 25.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He made 18 All-Star teams in his 20-year NBA career, in addition to winning two scoring titles and one regular season MVP award.
