The Los Angeles Lakers announced Monday a nine-part docuseries on the franchise will join the Hulu Originals lineup. The project is currently untitled and will drop on Hulu in 2022.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and award-winning director Antoine Fuqua are helming the series, which will focus on the past four decades after late owner Jerry Buss purchased the franchise in 1979.

Via the official press release:

The series details the past four decades of the Lakers, and contains colorful and emotional new interviews from over 35 people within the organization, including the Buss family, legendary coaches Pat Riley and Phil Jackson, and NBA Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and team captain Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, among numerous other current and former players. Also featured are interviews with a range of high-profile fans and a treasure trove of archival footage featuring never-before-seen interviews with the Lakers late owner, Jerry Buss.

The Lakers obviously had plenty of success before the Showtime era, including a number of titles when the franchise was still in Minneapolis, but things really took off once Jerry Buss became the owner. They won five NBA titles in the 1980s and then enjoyed a dynasty with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, complete with a three-peat.

Kobe won two more titles with Pau Gasol in 2009 and 2010, and then LeBron James and Anthony Davis got the Lakers back to the mountaintop in 2020.

This docuseries will surely be must-see television for Lakers fans, and for fans of the NBA in general. There have been so many colorful characters in this franchise's history, so this should surely bring plenty of entertainment, just like The Last Dance did in 2020.
