The Los Angeles Lakers are holding out hope that Anthony Davis will return before the end of the regular season, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

“The Lakers are saying it's a month before he's re-evaluated,” Woj reported on NBA Today. “I'm told the hope is they can at least get Anthony Davis back in the lineup and playing during the regular season. There's only six weeks left in the season once we come out of All-Star break.”

After undergoing an MRI on Thursday, AD was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain. The Lakers announced he would be re-evaluated in four weeks (which would be about March 17).  The Lakers have 24 more games on their slate.

Los Angeles (27-31) is currently ninth in the Western Conference, six games behind the Denver Nuggets for the No. 6 seed, and 4.5 games up on the No. 11-seeded San Antonio Spurs.

In Wednesday's win over the Utah Jazz, Davis fell awkwardly when his right ankle landed on Rudy Gobert's foot in the second quarter. He had to be carried to the Lakers locker room, unable to put any weight on his right leg. X-rays revealed no fracture.

“Obviously it’s sickening to see AD go down in that fashion,” LeBron said. “I hope he’s fine. Obviously, I mean, I know he’s not like, great, but obviously his health is most important for him individually, for our ballclub … I just wish him the best.”

The Lakers went 7-10 in the 17 games Davis missed with an MCL sprain in December and January, and their defense was amongst the worst in basketball. Los Angeles is 10-11 without him in 2021-22.

AD is averaging 23.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 2.3 blocks in 36 games this season. He put up 23.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks since returning on Jan. 25. LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook have played 20 games together.
