The Los Angeles Lakers’ season might already be over, but they aren’t quite done making moves yet. Ahead of the 2022 – 23 season, they have been looking at in-house improvements for next season. First up in their list is an early-season fan favorite that has been balling out in their G-League affiliate.
Mac McClung, the former high school phenom who was signed by the Lakers, has been balling out for their G-League team South Bay. As a result, the team has awarded McClung with a two-way contract, as reported by Shams Charania.
The Los Angeles Lakers are planning to sign guard Mac McClung to a two-way NBA contract, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. McClung went to training camp with the Lakers and has developed in their South Bay affiliate where he won G League Rookie of the Year.

McClung barely saw any court time with the Lakers this season, mainly because of the team’s title aspirations. However, he’s showed off his goods in the G-League, earning Rookie of the Year honors there for South Bay. His athleticism and scoring ability will be of great use for the team once it develops further.
It’s a hard road ahead for the Lakers, who were incredibly disappointing this season. Acquiring Russell Westbrook and a bunch of veteran names were supposed to help them reclaim the title this year. However, the core just didn’t quite fit well with each other, and there was constant turmoil surrounding the team. As a result, they have a LOT of difficult decisions to make in the off-season.
At the very least, they have some good players developing in South Bay. It’s unclear whether McClung will get some burn next season for the Lakers, but the former high school sensation is grateful for this opportunity, at the very least.
