Derrick Williams’s NBA return is apparently going to be just a brief one – at least for now – as it has been reported by Bill Oram of the OC Register that the former lottery pick is not expected to get a second 10-day deal from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Williams got back into the NBA earlier this month when he was inked by the Lakers to a 10-day deal on Mar. 9. Since then, however, the former Arizona Wildcat was used in just two games, spending nine total minutes on the floor and scoring two points on 1-of-4 shooting to go with a solitary rebound which he all accumulated during a 117-106 loss at the hands of the Golden State Warriors on Mar. 14.

Derrick Williams was not at all expected to have a significant role on the Lakers apart from just being a roster-filler and an insurance policy at the power forward position, especially with how well Julius Randle has been playing of late. Over the past 10 games, Randle has averaged 22.9 points on 60.7 field goal shooting percentage, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists.

With Williams about to be cut loose by the Lakers, the team could probably find a wing player to cover the final spot on their roster. As for Williams, who was selected second overall by Minnesota back in the 2011 NBA Draft, he could opt to play in the G-League, where he could play well enough to attract attention from other NBA teams.

Prior to his stint with the Lakers, Williams played 50 games split between with the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016-17 season.
