Game recognizes game. This was true on Monday when Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James congratulated the great Lindsay Whalen on her exceptional WNBA career. The Minnesota Lynx guard announced that she would be retiring at the conclusion of this season.

Her retirement isn't coming as a huge surprise. Whalen has accomplished just about everything one can accomplish. James points out that of all her accomplishments, her ability to win stands out most.

The all-time WNBA great is not preparing to slow down in her retirement, though. She's off to coach her alma mater, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Minnesota native is one of the smartest players in the WNBA and the fact that LeBron James is shouting her out is indicative of how respected she is throughout the basketball community.

Whalen has won five WNBA championships — all with the Lynx — and will retire with the most wins of any player in WNBA history. Those are two gigantic accomplishments that point to her ability to make her teammates better.

And if you're thinking that Whalen just got lucky by playing for good teams, think again. Whalen made the All-WNBA First Team three times and the Second Team twice. She has been one of the most successful basketball players of her generation — man or woman.

The WNBA is losing a true star, but watching Whalen continue to build upon her legacy with the Minnesota women's basketball team is a decent consolation. This basketball lifer deserves all the accolades and praises coming her way.
