LeBron James agreed to a two-year, $85 million contract extension through 2023 with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, a move not many in the league saw coming. Most pundits were expecting the next big Lakers deal to be for Anthony Davis, who's an unrestricted free agent.

Even though James and Davis share the same agent in Klutch Sports' Rich Paul, AD's decision-making is independent of James' extension. LeBron just wanted to get some extra security as he reaches the end of his career, while Davis will make his own decision.

Via Brian Windhorst of ESPN:

As for Anthony Davis, sources said, he is still weighing how to structure his contract as he tries to gauge how the salary cap will grow in the next few years. Davis has been looking at spreadsheets trying to best guess how to plan the contracts for the rest of his career beyond this deal he's soon to sign. His decision-making is independent of LeBron James', though they share agent Rich Paul, and now that James is locked into an extension.

Davis is going to re-sign with the Lakers. The superstar big man is just trying to figure out what type of contract makes sense for him.

The Lakers, behind James and Davis, won the 2020 title over the Miami Heat in six games at Walt Disney World in the NBA bubble. AD averaged 27.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in the 2020 playoffs against the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets and Heat. James, meanwhile, put up 27.6 points, 10.8 boards and 8.8 assists per game.

There have been some rumors going around the league that Davis is waiting to see what Giannis Antetokounmpo does before signing his new contract with the Lakers. If Antetokounmpo doesn't sign the supermax extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, he'll become a free agent in 2021, so James and Davis could then recruit the two-time MVP to Los Angeles.
