As Team USA makes its final preparations for the upcoming summer Olympics, one of the most glaring absences from the squad is none other than Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James. Then again, no one really expected the four-time NBA champ to join the national squad, and at this point, it looks like this is something we should all get used to.
According to USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo, he believes that LeBron's time with Team USA has come to an end:
“You know, Father Time takes its toll,” Colangelo said on a recent appearance on ESPN's Keyshawn, JWill and Zubin. “… If you're a human being, your body is built to go so long depending on what your sport is, and then it's a downhill situation. LeBron made choices these last couple of Olympics not to participate because he's got a lot of things going on in his life. So he put in his time, he made a contribution that is appreciated, but I think his time is over.”
LeBron is already 36 and it's no secret that he is now in the twilight of his decorated career. As such, it comes as no surprise that James is no longer expected to take part in any of the national team's future endeavors. Nevertheless, it's still something that's tough to hear now that it is (somewhat) official.
This is yet another reminder that LeBron James is not going to be playing basketball forever. His time in the league is coming to an end sooner rather than later and at this point, we all just better enjoy The King while we still can.
