A tumultuous week ended on a positive note for Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Lonzo Ball, who didn’t have to throw a ton of bricks to grab the headlines on Sunday, as he recorded a triple-double of 11 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists in helping the Lakers take down the visiting Denver Nuggets, 127-109. He also had two blocks and made a 3-pointer on four attempts across 40 minutes of action.

Of all the numbers he put up tonight, it’s the number of boards he pulled down that might be the most outstanding. After all, according to ClutchPoints' Ryan Ward, Ball’s 16 rebounds was the most in a game by a rookie guard since Michael Carter-Williams had 14 back in 2014.

Lonzo Ball also tied the most rebounds by a rookie guard since the turn of the millennium with O.J. Mayo, who also had 16 boards in a game back in 2009. As of today, Ball now has three 10-plus rebounds games, per Basketball Reference, and as pointed out by Serena Winters of SportsNet.

Ball has been struggling with his shot this season, but it hasn’t stopped him from contributing in other areas. This year, the Lakers point guard is averaging 8.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game.

Ball and the Lakers make a one-day rest before playing the Chicago Bulls at Staples Center this Tuesday.
