The Los Angeles Lakers have been awarded Kostas Antetokounmpo on a waiver claim, according to the team.

News of the Lakers claiming Antetokounmpo off waivers broke Sunday after the Dallas Mavericks waived him on Friday.

According to Los Angeles, Kostas Antetokounmpo, the younger brother of reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, will serve with the team on a two-way contract. That means he'll likely be spending the majority of his time with the Lakers' G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers:

Kostas Antetokounmpo, now 21 years of age, made 40 appearances with the Texas Legends (Dallas Mavericks G League affiliate) last season, racking up averages of 10.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and a steal in 25.4 minutes per outing.

Antetokounmpo played one season of collegiate hoops at Dayton, averaging 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 15.1 minutes per game. Following his stint with the Flyers, the 6-10 forward declared for the NBA Draft (2018), where he was selected by the Sixers with the 60th overall pick.

Though they acquired LeBron James in the previous offseason, the Lakers finished the 2018-19 campaign with a disappointing 37-45 overall record, which left the team out of playoff contention. Injuries played a role, to be sure. James went down with a hamstring injury near the midway point of the season, leaving him out of commission for 17 consecutive games.

Things have changed quite a bit around the NBA landscape this offseason, however, and the Lakers seem poised to make a serious run at the playoffs after acquiring Anthony Davis, Danny Green and DeMarcus Cousins, among others.
