The Los Angeles Lakers have decided to exercise Kyle Kuzma's player option for 2020-21. This was merely a formality as the season approaches:

Kuzma, who's currently dealing with a left foot stress reaction, has established himself as a capable NBA player in a relatively short period of time. Without a doubt, the Lakers are happy with his level of production thus far. The 24-year-old made 70 appearances with the Lakers last season (68 starts), racking up averages of 18.7 points on 45.6 percent shooting from the field (30.3 percent from beyond the arc), 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 33.1 minutes per outing.

The Lakers are being viewed as a favorite in the Western Conference this season. The team made a blockbuster move over the summer, acquiring Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans. Wth LeBron James and several other talented players on the roster, those lofty expectations come with some merit.

As for his recovery, Kuzma seems to be heading in the right direction. He has been moving well in ball-handling drills and non-contact practice routines, but he still remains without a timetable. It's not clear if he'll be ready to take the floor for the regular-season opener, which tips off on Oct. 22 with a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.
