The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly been granted permission to meet and discuss their vacant head coaching job with Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Monty Williams, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Lakers and Luke Walton parted ways on Friday. Walton was the head coach of the Lakers for three seasons.

Monty Williams began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers. He then became the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2010. The 47-year-old was with the Pels for five years.

Williams was an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015. He took some time off after his wife tragically passed away. Williams then joined the Sixers as an assistant coach last summer.

The Lakers are in desperate need of a strong voice to lead the franchise. Los Angeles missed the playoffs this season and hasn't made the postseason since 2013.

Williams could be a coach that Lakers star small forward LeBron James respects. Los Angeles will try and trade for Williams' former franchise player this summer, Pelicans star Anthony Davis. AD and Williams had a strong rapport with each other during their time together.

Since Williams and the Sixers are in the playoffs right now, the Lakers will only be able to reach Williams by phone.
