The Los Angeles Lakers have assigned backup point guard Rajon Rondo to the South Bay Lakers for a rehab assignment in the G League, the team announced Monday afternoon.

Rondo suffered a broken right hand on Nov. 14 against the Portland Trail Blazers at home after punching the floor. The four-time All-Star underwent surgery and also had his right hand drained last week due to swelling.

Rondo, who signed a one-year deal with the Lakers in the summer after playing with the New Orleans Pelicans last season, is averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game this season and shooting 45.5 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from the 3-point line and 50.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Once he returns to the Lakers and is cleared to play, Rondo will back up second-year guard Lonzo Ball at the point guard spot. The Lakes are 18-12 on the year, good for fourth place in the rugged Western Conference. Despite Sunday's loss to the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles is 7-3 in its last 10 games.

Rajon Rondo gives the Lakers another ball-handler next to LeBron James and Ball, and his IQ level of the game is always needed since LA is a young team.
