The Los Angeles Lakers have their new head coach.

The team announced Friday in a press release that Luke Walton has agreed to a multi-year deal with the franchise he played for nine seasons.

General manager Mitch Kupchak said in the release:

“We're excited to bring Luke back to Los Angeles, where we feel he's going to start an outstanding coaching career. He's one of the brightest young coaching minds in the game and we feel fortunate that he'll be leading the on-court future of our team.”

Walton led the Warriors to a 39-4 start, as well as 24 straight wins to begin the season, while Golden State head coach Steve Kerr was recovering from an injury. He even received coach of the year votes this year as an assistant.

The former Laker takes over the storied Los Angeles franchise in a rebuilding era after the retirement of future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant. It will be interesting to see what Walton can do with the strong young Lakers core of D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Jordan Clarkson.
