Los Angeles Lakers veteran small forward Jared Dudley believes point guard Rajon Rondo has to play at a high level for LA to win the championship this season.

Rondo is LeBron James' back up at the point guard spot. He's become a polarizing figure with Lakers fans, but Dudley knows the one-time champion is going to be important for the Purple and Gold once the playoffs start:

Rondo has appeared in 41 games for the Lakers this season. He's averaging 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists while shooting 42.4 percent from the field, 34.9 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Lakers are 32-9 with Rondo in the lineup and 44-12 overall on the season. LA still has the best record in the Western Conference.

Besides being an elite floor general, Rondo will have to make open jumpers for the Lakers once the playoffs begin. Because LeBron and Anthony Davis are going to command so much attention when they put their heads down and drive to the basket, Rondo and the rest of the perimeter players on the team have to be ready to knock down open shots.

The Lakers were linked to Derrick Rose, Darren Collison and Dennis Schroder at the trade deadline. LA would have loved to get one of those guys to place Rondo, but now that the trade deadline has passed, the Lakers are riding with Rondo since they have no other choice but to.
