Los Angeles Lakers guard Rajon Rondo has been ruled out for the team's matchup with the Chicago Bulls. Rondo could make his return during the team's upcoming homestand, however.

The Lakers have yet to play a game this season with Rondo in the lineup. He began the season dealing with calf soreness, and it hasn't improved enough for him to be able to play yet. The team has been starting Avery Bradley at the point guard spot through six games.

To work his way back into form, Rondo participated in 3-on-3 action with teammates during the Lakers' practice in Chicago. Upon returning from their road trip, coach Frank Vogel and Co. are expected to integrate Rondo into 5-on-5 work. That should help the team get a better idea of when exactly he will be able to return to game action.

After winning five consecutive games, it's unclear how needed Rondo is for the Lakers. The two areas where Vogel wants the team to improve are their slow starts and rebounding, but integrating Rondo into the lineup may not fix those issues.

Regardless of how the Lakers end up using Rondo this season, the dynamic duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis will set the tone with the supporting pieces falling in line around them. It should at least help that Rondo has already played with both James and Davis for at least one season.

Updates regarding Rondo's status are expected to come at a later point this week.
