With the cap space the Los Angeles Lakers have now and next summer’s free agency looming, Rob Pelinka currently admitted that he and their other executives still have a lot of thinking to do. Despite the growing belief that they will most likely go for a big name free agent, he knows that is not the only option left for them.

The 48-year-old general manager then said, via Kevin Ding of Lakers.com, that there are other scenarios the team are considering. Whether it may be going after a superstar, re-signing some of their players, or a combination of both, this is all being planned by the entire organization as they look to place themselves in the best possible position to content for a title in the coming years.

“Of course the media stories are going to focus on the biggest free-agent names,” Pelinka said. “But that’s not the only road. We could use the cap space on superstars. We could use it for one star and some of our own players. Or we could just use it on our own free agents: Julius [Randle], Brook, and KCP [Kentavious Caldwell-Pope] are all free agents, and I think we’re evaluating all of those things.

While there are still a few more months to go before the start of free agency, it’s a good sign that the Lakers are already planning ahead as they understand how important their next moves are. They have long been linked to some marquee names set to become free agents in the offseason, but the experience of their front office personnel is now very evident, as they are not rushing their moves and will continue to study every angle first until it’s time to finally make a decision.
