Los Angeles Lakers GM Rob Pelinka firmly believes the Purple and Gold got a rare kind of a player in superstar guard Russell Westbrook.

While a lot has been said about Westbrook's impact on winning (or lack thereof) and his thing for triple-doubles, Pelinka has nothing but high praises for the 32-year-old. In fact in a recent ESPN broadcast, the Lakers exec described Westbrook as a “unicorn” and noted that they couldn't pass up on the opportunity to  acquire him (h/t The Lakers Files).

Pelinka added that the Westbrook acquisition fills their big need in playmaking, while the additions of Wayne Ellington, Malik Monk, Kendrick Nunn, Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony address their shooting woes.

The Lakers traded for Russell Westbrook before the 2021 draft night, sending a package of Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell and their No. 22 pick in the said draft.

Westbrook now forms a new Big 3 in LA alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They are also backed by veteran talent composed of not only Anthony,, but also Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza and  Marc Gasol to name a few.

Westbrook is certainly a major upgrade at the point guard spot, which saw Dennis Schroder take over the starting role in 2020-21.

Of course there are concerns whether Russ will be able to thrive without the ball in his hands since LeBron and AD are expected to lead the offense. But by the looks of it, Rob Pelinka is confident Westbrook and the Lakers can make it work.
