Chicago Bulls legend and NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen believes the Los Angeles Lakers should do whatever it takes to acquire Trevor Ariza from the Phoenix Suns.

On Friday's edition of ESPN's “The Jump,” Scottie Pippen said if the Lakers trade for Trevor Ariza, they would instantly become a contender.

“I like what the Lakers have done,” Pippen said. “I think getting Trevor Ariza instantly makes you a contender. Especially when you talk about a player that's so impactful on the defensive end. I think this is huge.”

There have been multiple reports that have stated the Lakers are in hot pursuit of Ariza, who signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Suns in the offseason. Saturday is when he becomes eligible to be traded.

Trevor Ariza is averaging 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game this year for the lowly Suns in 26 games. The 33-year-old is shooting 37.9 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 83.7 percent from the free-throw line. Ariza played for the Lakers before and won the 2009 championship with the club.

The Lakers need Trevor Ariza because he is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA and can shoot the 3-ball well. Many people around the league believe the swingman will end up in Los Angeles sooner rather than later.
