The Los Angeles Lakers made a rather surprising head coaching hire this past weekend, bringing in former Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic head coach Frank Vogel to take the reins.

While Vogel was certainly not LeBron James' first choice, he liked Instagram posts discussing the Lakers' decision to hire Vogel and to bring in Jason Kidd as an assistant, so that could be seen as a seal of approval.

But FOX Sports analyst and Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe is not at all happy with the Lakers' move, and he expressed his displeasure on “Undisputed” on Monday morning:

Sharpe may have been a bit too hard on Vogel, as he does come with some NBA success.

He landed his first head coaching job with the Pacers midway through the 2011-12 campaign, and outside of the 2014-15 season in which Paul George missed just about all of the year due to a gruesome broken leg injury, he took Indiana to the playoffs in five of his six seasons at the helm, leading the Pacers to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014.

Overall, Vogel went 250-181 during his time with the Pacers. He then went on to coach the Orlando Magic but did not have nearly as much success, posting a record of 54-110 over the course of two seasons.

Vogel did not coach in the NBA at all this past year.

The Lakers are coming off a 2018-19 campaign in which they won just 37 games and missed the playoffs, and they also saw Magic Johnson step down as team president at the end of the season.
