ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith says the Los Angeles Lakers are the front-runner to sign Golden State Warriors superstar small forward Kevin Durant in free agency next summer.

Durant, a nine-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion, can become an unrestricted free agent after this season ends if he declines his 2019-20 player option with the Warriors, something he is widely expected to do since more money is available to him on the open market.

In light of all the drama going on between Draymond Green and Kevin Durant, many believe there's no way Durant will re-sign with the Warriors. KD has been linked to the Lakers before due to his close relationship with LeBron James.

The Lakers will have cap space next summer to sign a star player to pair alongside LeBron. It's no secret that Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson is going to heavily court Kevin Durant. Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Heavy reported in early September that Durant will join the Lakers after this season.

Since joining the Warriors back in the summer of 2016, Kevin Durant has won two straight championships and two Finals MVPs with relative ease. At some point, he has to look for a new challenge to embark on, and playing with LeBron in Los Angeles and trying to bring the Lakers back to prominence could be one of them.
