ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith is not buying what oddsmakers are selling, particularly one that concerns about the Los Angeles Lakers’ probable win total in the 2018-19 NBA season. Most sportsbooks have the Lakers’ win total line set at 48.5 (h/t Yahoo Sports), but Smith thinks that LeBron James and company will not only surpass it, but also crush the relatively lowly expectations for the team.

“I think LeBron and the Lakers are going to win over 50 games. I think LeBron is not only arriving in LA to wear the Purple and Gold.  I think LeBron knows that every mega superstar that has ever worn the Purple and Gold outside of Elgin Baylor have delivered a world championship – an NBA championship – to the Los Angeles Lakers and Lakers nation.”

It’s been a while since Los Angeles last tasted success the franchise could be proud of. It’s been five years since the team made its most recent trip to the playoffs, and since then, the Lakers have not won more than 35 games in a single campaign.

But the arrival of James gives the Lakers a tremendous shot in the arm that effectively puts the team on the map in terms of competitiveness. Then again, there are media outlets like ESPN, which is not convinced that having the services of the four-time league MVP is enough for the Lakers to join the postseason party.

It’s an entirely different case in the book of Stephen A. Smith, who also gave his prediction as to how high the Lakers will finish at the end of the regular season.

“The Lakers will be a top-three seed in the Western Conference.”

We’ll all just have to see and wait.
