The uncertainty that is brought about by the coronavirus pandemic is expected to have a significant effect on free agency this coming offseason and into the future. According to an unnamed top agent in the NBA, it would be more prudent for a guy like Los Angeles Lakers star big man Anthony Davis to sign a one-year deal this summer and then hit free agency in 2021.

The anonymous agent recently spoke with David Aldridge and John Hollinger of The Athletic and explained why a short-term deal is the most ideal course of action for Davis:

“Me, it’s just too much unknown,” said the agent. “It probably makes sense for everybody to sign a one-year deal. Even the big free agents like Anthony Davis – sign a one-year deal (this summer) and see what the numbers are for ’21, and sign a contract based off the projections for that.”

Davis has a player option for the 2020-21 season. He declined to sign an extension with the Lakers earlier this year, but he is still expected to put pen to paper on a new deal with L.A. this offseason, assuming he does in fact opt out out of his $28.75 million deal.

Given the uncertainty of the entire situation, however, this agent believes it would be in Davis' best interests financially to sign a one-year deal this offseason instead of a long-term contract. It's unclear just what the salary cap is going to look like given the losses the NBA is taking this year, so a long-term deal in 2020 might not be as lucrative as one in 2021.

For now, Anthony Davis is focused on the Lakers restarting the season at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Los Angeles is one of the championship favorites, and winning the title would only help keep him in Hollywood.
