Chris Paul was reported to have interest in joining the Los Angeles Clippers. As for the defending champion Lakers? Not so much.

Stephen A. Smith reported Thursday CP3 does not want to go to the Lakers because they already achieved the ultimate goal of winning a championship just last year:

“The reason he doesn’t want to go to the Lakers is they’re already established, already accomplished,” Smith said, via USA TODAY. “There’s really nothing for him to do for them, it’s only what they can do for him and that’s ring chasing, not the ring chasing Chris Paul wants to do. That’s stacking the deck.”

Some might be confused as to why Paul has interest in the Clippers, who are every bit as talented as the Lakers.

Well, the Clippers have yet to win a title. Plus, there is history there, given Paul spent six seasons in L.A. in the midst of his prime.

It might be notable, however, that Paul would prioritize establishing a new winner, rather than playing with friends like LeBron James.

Perhaps this explains Paul's interest in the Phoenix Suns, a franchise that has young stars like Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton but also has failed to make the playoffs in each of the last 10 years.

One thing is clear: Paul will likely be the prize of the 2020 offseason.

This is a fairly weak free-agent class, and it remains to be seen just how aggressive teams will be in the trade market. Paul's potential move to a contender or upstart such as the Suns could prompt a potentially massive shift in the NBA.
