One part of the original Golden State Warriors superteam, Klay Thompson has evolved into one of the best two-way players in the league, making him a potential target of the Los Angeles Lakers come summer of 2019.
Without a doubt, he can score in bunches but don't be fooled by his silky smooth release. He can definitely hold his own on the defensive end, usually getting the assignment of guarding the opposing team's best perimeter player.
Most teams covet his services, and with the 2019 free agency soon on the way, it wouldn't be a surprise for teams to express their interest in the All-Star marksman.
Ramona Shelburne of ESPN dropped Thompson's name regarding the Lakers' rumored interest when she was a guest in “ESPNLA Mornings with Keyshawn, LZ, and Travis.”
“In terms of who they target next year, it’s whoever wants to come. “My feeling about it, my sense from just talking to people in and around this (is that) one, it’s a little early, but I think they like Mychal’s boy. I think that would be the guy, in terms of skillset and how that would fit. Obviously Kawhi, he’s a great player as well, but we’ll see if he stays in Toronto now. But I think they like Klay (Thompson).”
Not a total surprise knowing he may be one of the under-the-radar big free agents next year behind Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler.
For legacy discussions, being the son of Lakers great Mychal Thompson automatically gets him rumored and tied to the storied franchise.
On a basketball perspective, he makes total sense to the Lakers due to the lack of star power and shooters on the roster. He would make an excellent catch-and-shoot or secondary scorer behind a ball-dominant Lebron James.
Look to the Lakers to go all out on big names and who fit their needs in next year's free agency.
