The Los Angeles Lakers had the opportunity to go after Reggie Jackson, who was believed to be the single most talented player available in the buyout market and one that fit a position of need at point guard. According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the Lakers never pursued Jackson, considering his agent, Aaron Mintz of CAA, also represents Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, who'd have all the strings necessary to reel him into the other side of the fence.

Pincus also mentions that while there's no particular bad blood between CAA and Klutch Sports, which represents players like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the agent and the Lakers have been “out of sync” for a while.

The Lakers are in dire need of a quality point guard to back up LeBron James and while it's not a given that they saw Jackson as one capable of doing so, they are getting out-maneuvered by their noisy neighbors, who acquired a quality player in Marcus Morris at the deadline and now another one that can bolster their point guard spot in Jackson.

R-Jax will get instant minutes so long as he can play while the Clippers await Patrick Beverley's return from a groin injury. The Clippers have gone with a makeshift lineup with Landry Shamet as their smallest player, keeping Lou Williams as a potent reserve. Yet Jackson's acquisition could give them a legitimate point guard to run the show.

The Lakers and Clippers missed out on veteran Darren Collison previously, as he chose to remain retired for the rest of this season.
