During the 2017-18 NBA season, it has been a challenging fourth year for Julius Randle. Despite coming off the bench and an uncertain future in Los Angeles, Randle is controlling what he can control. In 30 appearances, he is averaging 12.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in just 22.4 minutes.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Lakers reportedly had initial talks with the Dallas Mavericks about a potential Randle for Nerlens Noel trade, via Rob Lopez of Def Pen Sports:

As Wojnarowski mentions, trade discussions did not get too far as Noel's thumb injury could keep him off the court for 4-6 weeks. However, it will be interesting to see if the two teams re-engage in discussions as the February trade deadline nears.

Since Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka took over the team's front office, it is no secret the Lakers are trying to clear the necessary cap space to sign two max contract players this upcoming free agency. As a result, it appears Randle's days in Los Angeles are numbered via trade or eventually in free agency.

After missing the playoffs for four consecutive seasons, the Lakers are looking to speed up the rebuilding process. With a young core established and the team being competitive under head coach Luke Walton, the hope is the Lakers will be a free agent destination once again.
