Portland Trail Blazers forward Carmelo Anthony has been heavily linked with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, and it seems there is truth to the rumors.

According to Jordan Schultz of ESPN, the Lakers are “very interested” in adding the veteran forward considering his friendship with LeBron James. Not to mention that the 37-year-old shot 40.9 percent from deep during the 2020-21 season with the Blazers, something the Purple and Gold can benefit from given their lack of long-range threats.

Anthony is an unrestricted free agent this 2021.

This corroborates earlier reports that Carmelo Anthony and Rudy Gay have been the “loudest” names being rumored to the Lakers. In fact, Bleacher Report even noted that the two–along with DeMar DeRozan–are willing to take less salary just to join LeBron and Co. in their pursuit of winning a championship.

Anthony has been linked to the Lakers in years past, especially during the time when Melo was out of the league. When Anthony signed with the Blazers, James admitted to recruiting his friend and claiming he would have wanted him to be in LA.

“Everything happens for a reason,” LeBron said at the time, per Christian Rivas of SB Nation. “And everything works its way out how it’s supposed to. Obviously I would have loved for him to be a Laker at that point in time, but I’m not sitting here today like ‘damn, he’s supposed to be a Laker, he should be doing that for us.’ No. Because what he’s doing for them, it was already written. It was already written. If it was written for him to be a Laker, he would have been a Laker.”

Maybe this time, Anthony will truly be a Laker as LeBron always wanted and fight for a ring with his good friend.
