It looks like Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss is counting on general manager Rob Pelinka to turn the franchise around without any help.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Lakers reportedly told coaching candidates they won't hire anyone above Pelinka and that he's in charge.
Magic Johnson stepped down from his president role before the season ended. Pelinka has been leading the coaching search.
“I know they told all of the candidates who interviewed Rob is the GM,” Wojnarowski said on the Woj pod. “Rob is going to be in charge. That's who you're going to answer to. We're not bringing in anybody in over him.”
The Lakers are expected to hire Tyronn Lue as the new head coach soon. They were in talks with Monty Williams, but he signed with the Phoenix Suns on a five-year deal last week.
Fans in Los Angeles probably don't trust Pelinka to get the organization back to prominence, but at this point, they don't have a choice.
This is a big summer for the Purple and Gold. They have to sign at least one star free agent to pair next to LeBron James. The Lakers will also try and trade for New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis again after failing to acquire him at the February trade deadline.
