The Los Angeles Lakers may have gambled by securing Dennis Schroder's talents for the upcoming season in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but it appears that his stay in L.A. may not be on a short-term basis.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the plan is to re-sign Schroder after his contract expires in 2021. The guard will be playing on a $15.5 million expiring deal in 2020-21.

It's unclear what kind of interest Schroder has in re-signing with the Lakers, but he'd certainly be in a good position to win if he decides to stick around. The Lakers are set up for success even as LeBron James declines, though he's still playing close to peak levels. They were able to pull off the blockbuster Anthony Davis trade over a year ago, which has already returned great dividends. After co-starring alongside James in their efforts to secure the franchise's 17th championship, it's reported that Davis will also re-up this offseason.

The Lakers will make more moves this offseason, and they'll certainly be the favorite to win the 2021 title almost no matter what happens. With Danny Green set to head out as part of this Schroder trade, Wesley Matthews is a prime target on the wing. Los Angeles will look at other options as well.

But acquiring Schroder is a great start, especially if the Lakers do wind up losing Rajon Rondo in free agency. The concern over losing Rondo reportedly played a role in going hard after Schroder.
