The Los Angeles Lakers made a major decision about the future of this franchise on Friday after it announced Darvin Ham as the team's new head coach. Ham was one of three finalists for the job, which also included Terry Stotts and Kenny Atkinson. Apparently, there was one major factor that led to LA's front office choosing Ham over his competitors.

According to Bill Oram of The Athletic, Ham had the Lakers brass impressed by his deep understanding of the technical aspects of the game:

And sources said he blew the Lakers away with his understanding of X’s and O’s.

Ham does not have any experience as a head coach but this did not hinder the Lakers from taking a huge gamble on him. The 48-year-old has an NBA championship to his name as an assistant to Mike Budenholzer of the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite his seeming lack of actual experience, Ham clearly has vast knowledge about the ins and outs of the game.

It's no easy task coaching a star-studded squad such as the Lakers, especially since the biggest name on the roster is LeBron James. Nevertheless, LA is confident that Ham has what it takes to lead this team to a bounceback season in 2022-23.
