The NBA is hoping teams in their respective markets can begin opening up practice facilities to allow individual players to conduct workouts amid the coronavirus pandemic. It seems the Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to reopen as soon as next week.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the Lakers are targeting May 16 as the date to potentially reopen their facility.

Charania added the Lakers will maintain contact with government and health officials in order to “ensure safety for players and staff.”

Dave McMenamin of ESPN previously reported the Lakers had been in contact with the mayor's office to discuss opening their facility even prior to the expiration of L.A.'s shelter-at-home order on May 15:

The Lakers have been in contact with the Los Angeles mayor's office to discuss the possibility of opening their practice facility for players before the current shelter-at-home order for L.A. residents expires on May 15, sources close to the matter told ESPN.

Naturally, the reopening of practice facilities ultimately depends on local governments. This might also vary from state to state, depending on the severity of coronavirus or access to care and other amenities.

In any case, this will be an important step for the NBA as they hope to resume the 2019-20 season. Players and coaches are going to need ample time to get back into game shape and get up to speed before games even restart, and access to the facilities should give team personnel the opportunity to work up to that point.

The Lakers will hope their own players and coaches can return to El Segundo by next weekend.
