At this point in the offseason, all 30 teams are usually quietly preparing for the 2017-18 NBA season. However, it was quite different this year as Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, the league has opened an investigation on the Los Angeles Lakers at the request of the Indiana Pacers.

With the NBA releasing an official statement, Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN report President of Basketball Operations Magic Johnson is the focal point of the Paul George tampering investigation:

The possibility of impermissible contact between Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson and four-time All-Star Paul George is at the crux of an NBA probe into possible tampering, league sources tell ESPN.

Should the league prove the Lakers are guilty, Los Angeles can be punished in numerous ways:

If the league office's probe can prove the Lakers were guilty of tampering with George while under contract with Indiana, Los Angeles can be punished in several ways, including a loss of draft picks, financial fines up to $5 million, future restrictions on acquiring George and possible suspensions of offending officials.

When it comes to Johnson, many will mention his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he winked when asked about George. However, as of right now, no decision has been made upon findings at this point according to the league.

After trading D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets, it is no secret the Lakers are creating the necessary cap space to sign two max contract players. Along with George, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and DeMarcus Cousins will all be free agents next year.
