Recently retired point guard Darren Collison has been rumored to be returning to the league this season, with the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers emerging as his preferred destinations.

Now, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy.com, the Lakers are the frontrunners to get Collison's services. However, the Purple and Gold are said to be exploring other options in order not to limit themselves.

But league sources tell Heavy.com that the Lakers are not limiting themselves to a pursuit of Collison when it comes to finding depth at point guard—though, a source said that the Lakers would be the frontrunner for his services.

“There’s not a lot they can do with the assets that they have,” one league executive told Heavy.com. “Whatever they can pull together, they’re going to try to get help at the point guard spot.”

At 35 years old, James still does most of playmaking for the Purple and Gold, leading the league in assists this year with 10.9 per game. He deflects the point guard duties to Rajon Rondo in stretches, while offensive-minded Alex Caruso also spends some time running the point for the Lakers.

Quin Cook, who hasn't seen much playing time this year, is another option for coach Frank Vogel, but his lack of playmaking skills have affected his minutes.

Darren Collison, on the other hand, is a proven floor general who has played in five teams throughout 10-year career. At just 32 years old, his sudden retirement from the sport caught a lot of people by surprise, especially since he was on the radar of a lot of teams in the offseason.

Collison has career averages of 12.5 points and 5.0 assists. As one person associated with the Lakers recently said, getting Collison will be  “unbelievable” and will surely elevate the team to the next level.
