When the Los Angeles Lakers swung a blockbuster trade to acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans back in June, it was widely assumed that Davis was a shoo-in to re-sign with the Lakers in free agency next summer.

However, when Davis began talking about how much he would like to play for the Chicago Bulls and saying that his focus is only on the 2019-20 campaign, some in Los Angeles began to worry that they could potentially lose their superstar big man after just one year.

But it seems that Davis will most likely stay in Tinseltown so long as LA doesn't have a disastrous season.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, one person close to Davis said that in order for the Lakers to retain Davis next offseason, all they have to do is not “f— it up.”

Of course, we have seen this type of thing before, as Amick notes.

Remember: just last year, Kyrie Irving told a sellout Boston Celtics crowd that he would be re-upping with the team, and Jimmy Butler said he wanted to re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers upon being traded there last November.

Anything can happen once free agency hits, and if the Lakers have as dysfunctional of a season as they were forced to endure a year ago, it's entirely possible that Davis could walk.

But we are a long way from even having to think about that, as this season hasn't even started yet.

The Lakers will get things underway on Tuesday night when they battle the Los Angeles Clippers.
