The national anthem demonstration in the NFL has now spilled into the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves exemplifying unity prior to their preseason match on Saturday by locking arms while the national anthem is being played — an act they hope would resonate to everyone in the country.

This was a planned gesture, as noted by Lakers head coach Luke Walton in an interview with Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

We are in this together,” Walton said of the coaches locking arms with the players. “I think they chose to show that we are united in this and that obviously, they have a ton of respect … well, I will let them speak for themselves, but I have a ton of respect for the country, the flag, the military.

As for the game itself, the Lakers and the Timberwolves didn’t exactly show what unity is like in a basketball contest as they combined for 35 turnovers. In the end, Minnesota took home a 108-99 victory. Taj Gibson led the Timberwolves with 18 points and nine rebounds.
