The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. And on Sunday night, the outside of the building was adorned with purple and gold lighting, as well as an image of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant.

Quite the monumental tribute to the father and daughter, both of whom — along with seven others — were killed in a fatal helicopter crash last Sunday in Calabasas.

Alaric Gomes of Gulf News — an English language newspaper published from Dubai — penned an op-ed entitled “Kobe Bryant–Adieu Black Mamba” on Friday. The piece re-established the Lakers great as an athlete who became bigger than sports.

Curiously Kobe decision to visit this part of the world, closer to his retirement may perhaps have been deliberate. He was one of the few top-class athletes having a majority of his huge fan base in Asia. But, when he descended at a packed DMCC Headquarters, the UAE was present in huge numbers to welcome him.

The above tribute, as well as Gomes' words, are indicative of Kobe Bryant's global impact in his 20 years in the NBA and with the Lakers. There is a tangible sadness felt by all at the loss of a father who inspired and a daughter whom he loved dearly.
