When the Los Angeles Lakers selected Svi Mykhailiuk as the 47th pick in last month’s NBA Draft, there was a collective groan on social media, mostly from people who have no idea who Mykhailiuk is.

They did not have to wait that long for the former Kansas Jayhawks guard to introduce himself as probably the second coming of James Harden.

Well, not really.

But Mykhailiuk is showing up in the Summer League campaign, even leaving some jaws hanging when he busted out a Harden-esque crossover and step-back jumper during one play in Thursday’s meeting with the L.A. Clippers. To top it all, he drained a wet jumper from the top of the key. Sheesh.

Fans who also follow college basketball are not surprised that Mykhailiuk is doing well so far in his pro career, even if it’s just in the Summer League. Mykhailiuk was among Bill Self’s most reliable players, especially in the guard’s last two years in Lawrence. Last season, Mykhailiuk averaged 14.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. A deadly outside shooter, he also shot 44.4 percent that season from beyond the arc.

Against the Clippers, he scored 15 points to go with three rebounds, and four assists in an 82-69 victory.

Don’t sleep on Mykhailiuk’s potential to become an occasional highlight producer in the NBA.
