It’s hard to think that James’ incredible career can be owed to his height, but height is might in a team sport like basketball. According to data presented by Pro Basketball Troops, the average height of an NBA player has steadily increased. However, it has seemingly plateaued in the 80s when it settled at around the 6’7″ mark. While the league has seen freak athletes like Bol Bol and Yao Ming enter the league, there hasn’t been a lot of change.

This puts LeBron James in an interesting position. The only position that eclipses him in height is center at 6’10”. The average heights of the rest of the positions are shorter in comparison to James.

This gives the three-time NBA champion the advantage on both sides of the ball. His athleticism can help him keep up with point and shooting guards; his power allows him to power down on forwards; his unique body gives him the opportunity to hold down the fort against a big center.

While it’s unlikely that this would have worked if James was playing in a different era, the fact that he stands 6’8.5″ without shoes allows him to become the best player in the NBA.
