Now that the NBA confirmed a December 22 start for the 2020-21 campaign, LeBron James fans are eagerly awaiting the Los Angeles Lakers' full schedule for the 72-game season. The Purple and Gold are once again expected to headline the league's highly-anticipated Christmas Day games on December 25. The question is, which team will get the honors of taking on the reigning NBA champs?

ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently made his case as to why the fit-again Golden State Warriors would be the perfect opponents for the Lakers on the holiday games. Via Marcus White of NBC Sports:

“I think the game that you will see as the centerpiece game [on Christmas] will be Warriors-Lakers. The reason [for] that is not only do you bring Steph Curry and Klay Thompson back … but also you're gonna have — unless the Warriors make a big trade — a top-three pick in this draft to be displayed, possibly in his first game. It could be James Wiseman's first game, in addition to the defending champion Lakers. That's a delicious matchup.”

At first glance, it doesn't make sense to pit the best team in the NBA against a squad that won just 15 games last season. The Dubs, however, are expected to regain their contender status in 2020-21, with the return of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson from their respective injuries.

The Lakers took on bitter rivals Los Angeles Clippers in the Christmas Day game last season. But that rivalry might have died up a bit this year considering the Clips failed to live up to the hype in the 2020 playoffs.

LeBron James, meanwhile, is no stranger to being away from home on the holidays. He played his 14th Christmas Day game last year and is second behind the late Kobe Bryant (16) for most Christmas Day appearances. James can tie his good pal Dwyane Wade for most Christmas day victories (10) if the Lakers come out victorious on December 25.

This year's holiday matches probably won't have the same allure since only limited fans would be in attendance due to the pandemic. Still, that potential Lakers-Warriors match-up does have fireworks written all over it.
