The recently announced signing of Dwight Howard to a three-year, $70.5 million contract leaves the Atlanta Hawks with a decision to make: Al Horford or Kent Bazemore?

Howard’s homecoming leaves the Hawks with about $19 million in cap space – almost zero dollars if you count Al Horford’s current $18 million hold on the space they currently have. Al will likely be able to negotiate a contract that will be at or around the maximum, which hovers around $26 million for the 2016-17 season if he decides to stay with the Hawks.

With Kent Bazemore reportedly commanding a market value of about $19-20 million a year, this leaves the Hawks with a choice of one of either Bazemore or Horford – both integral parts of the team’s Eastern Conference Semifinals run last season.

What the team will do remains to be seen. The two pieces that the Hawks prioritized the most going into the offseason may both, in the end, not be returning to Atlanta after all.
