Running back C.J. Anderson enjoyed a bit of a resurgence in the 2018 NFL season. It appears he will have an opportunity to capitalize on it with the Detroit Lions.

Anderson had been testing the waters of free agency this offseason following a successful stint with the Los Angeles Rams. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, he has agreed to a one-year deal with the Lions:

Former Rams’ RB C.J. Anderson reached agreement on a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, per source. Chance to produce this season, then hit market again after this season.

The Lions signing Anderson hardly comes as any surprise. They found their future lead back in Kerryon Johnson last year. However, his knee injury down the final stretch of the 2018 campaign reminded them of their need to shore up some depth in their backfield.

Anderson has certainly proven that he can oblige. He started the 2018 season being cut from the Carolina Panthers and the Oakland Raiders before finally settling down with the Rams. He quickly proved to be a viable complementary option to running back Todd Gurley down the final stretch of the season. It was not long before he proved to be one of the most valuable midseason pickups thanks to his efforts in place of an injured Gurley.

Anderson will now likely serve as the backup for Johnson moving forward. The Lions have been vocal about trying to instill a more balanced approach on offense. Johnson and Anderson could prove to be one of the more potential one-two punches in the league.
