With the NFL Preseason finally coming to a close, this is the last chance for many players to earn a spot on the roster. That certainly seems to be the case for Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah.
The Lions have made some significant changes to the backfield this offseason. As a result, Abdullah acknowledged the possibility of not making the cut, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press:
“Right now, my mindset is on tomorrow, getting things even more broken down and focused and narrowed down on Cleveland,” he said. “I'm not really here to say I'm going to be on the roster. Cause right now that's out of my control and that's something that's next week. I can't control the future.”
Needless to say, Abdullah has experienced quite the fall from grace this offseason. He is coming off yet another underwhelming season as the starting running back after finishing the 2017 campaign with 552 yards and four touchdowns. He was also able to tack on 25 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown, however, his performance hardly inspired confidence in his status as the starter moving forward.
As a result, Detroit decided to re-tool the backfield this offseason. Running back Kerryon Johnson has emerged as the team's potential early-down back and will be competing for touches with running back LeGarrette Blount.
The coaching staff has already indicated that the latter will handle any goal-line work. Meanwhile running back Theo Riddick has had a stranglehold on the Lion's receiving role for some time now. That said, Abdullah could very well be playing his last game in Detroit come Thursday.
